Complex Dielectric Permittivity and Electrical Conductivity Measurements as a Diagnostic Tool for the Detection of Heavy Metals Adsorbed in Bentonite Samples
نویسنده
چکیده
The adsorption of heavy metals (Pb and Ni) in raw Wyoming bentonite was investigated by means of broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) in the frequency range 10 -2 Hz – 10 6 Hz and at elevated temperatures, up to 1000 o C. In order to reveal various aspects of data interpretation, different formalisms of analysis were investigated, namely, complex electrical conductivity, dielectric modulus and Cole-Cole diagrams of complex impedance. The presence of different states of bound water in pure and contaminated bentonite samples results to nonreproducible recorded spectra at room temperature and it is necessary to measure at higher temperatures in order to clarify their contribution to the overall dielectric response. The observed spectral differences between pure and contaminated samples in modulus formalism are attributed to the contribution of heavy metal ions to the conduction mechanisms, which are thermally activated. A non-Arrhenius behavior of dc-conductivity is observed during heating and subsequent cooling of pure and contaminated samples, suggesting different conduction mechanisms in each case.

Determination of Soil Pore Water Salinity Using an FDR Sensor Working at Various Frequencies up to 500 MHz
This paper presents the application of a frequency-domain reflectometry (FDR) sensor designed for soil salinity assessment of sandy mineral soils in a wide range of soil moisture and bulk electrical conductivity, through the determination of soil complex dielectric permittivity spectra in the frequency range 10-500 MHz. The real part of dielectric permittivity was assessed from the 380-440 MHz,...

Oxidation of sulfide-containing ores is the main cause of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD), which is an environmental problem associated with both the abandoned and active mines. Iron-bearing sulfide minerals can be oxidized and form mine waters with high sulfate content, low pH, high electrical conductivity, high redox potential, and high concentrations of iron, aluminum, and other heavy metals. In th...

Measurements of the electric conductivity, σ, and relative dielectric permittivity, εr, were conducted (0.1Hz –15 MHz) on 40 air-dried soil samples that were subsequently analyzed for pH, total organic matter in soil (ΔM/m1), P2O5, , Fe2O3 and heavy metal concentrations (Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni, Cu и Zn). The pH of soil samples varied between pH 5.25 and pH 7.73 (mean pH 6.71), the ΔM/m1 varied between ...

Lead-free (Ba0.85Ca0.15)[(Zr0.1Ti0.9)]O3 (BCZT) piezoceramics were synthesized using solid-state ceramic processing. In order to improve the electrical properties CeO2 and CuO additives/dopants were used and two methods were employed to introduce theses oxides; one, in which 0.1 mol.% CeO2 was mixed with the raw materials and the composition was balanced for A-site substitution (BCCe0.1ZT) and ...
